Joseph Clyde Rumburg Jr. Obituary
Joseph Clyde Rumburg, Jr., age 97, passed away peacefully on June 4 in Green Valley, Az. He was born in May of 1921 in Lewis, Colorado, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Clyde Rumburg. He was enlisted in the Marine Corps 1941 - 1945 where he served in the South Pacific.

After returning from war, Joe became a seasonal employee at Mesa Verde National Park (CO) before getting his permanent assignment at Big Bend NP in Texas. Future ranger assignments included Zion & Bryce Canyon (UT), Grand Canyon (AZ), and Rocky Mountain National Park (CO). His first Superintendence was at George Washington Carver National Monument in Missouri and was then selected as first Superintendent of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area (MT). After that he was transferred to Superintendent of the Natchez Trace National Parkway in Mississippi.

In l968 He was appointed Asst. Regional Director of Operations, Western Region San Francisco and became Director of Western Region, San Francisco in 1970. He was then assigned to Washington D.C. as Deputy Associate Director of Operations. Following that he served as Regional Director, SW Region in Santa Fe 1974 until his retirement in l976. Ten years later, he and Barbara moved to Rio Rico, Az.

Joe was given the Department of Interior Distinguished Service Award in Dec. 1974 for his contributions to Dept. of Interior through the National Park Service.

He enjoyed fishing, gardening, golfing, birdwatching, and the company of family and friends. He was an avid reader. His good humor and caring nature were a gift to all who were lucky enough to encounter him.

The family is honoring his request for no services; any remembrances can be made to the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) the Nature Conservancy, or Habitat for Humanity.
