John Haley Obituary

Husband, Brother, Dad, Grampy, and Great-Grampy, John Edward Haley of Clayton, Indiana passed away peacefully early Sunday morning on February 8, 2026.

Born in Evansville, IN on July 22, 1950 to Glenda and Howard Haley, he is survived by his sister, LaRue Haley Snyder and brother, Richard Lee Haley. The family moved to Speedway, IN, permanently settling in their longtime family home. John graduated from Speedway High School in 1968. He attended Ball State University, and became an accomplished mechanical engineer working for Indiana State University and consulting firm R.E. Dimond and Associates of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Married on September 5th, 1971, he was a devoted, dedicated, and loving husband to his surviving wife, Linda Kay (Strout) Haley and was a caring and supportive father to his three surviving children and their spouses: Kara Layne and Erik Brian Baugues, Johnathan Erik and Kristin Marie Haley, and William Jakob Endicott Haley and Brooke Camille Kile. John loved nothing more than spending time with his children, their spouses, and his six grandchildren: Caleb Nathaniel Haley, Jillian Danielle (Haley) Cox, and Haley Elyse, Kayte Layne, Riley Brianne, and Elyzabeth Anne Baugues. He loved playfully doting on his four great-grandchildren: Elodie LeeAnn Haley; Julia Kaye, Jane Melody, and his namesake, baby John Calvin Cox.

He was an avid fisherman and loved life on the water. He also enjoyed haggling with countless car salesmen for hours on end, until he would inevitably get a great deal and often ask those close to him, “How much do you think I paid for that?” A season ticket holder for more than 30 years, he was a faithful Colts fan, always preferring to listen to the radio broadcast while watching the game and yelling at the referees. His common sense and wisdom were unparalleled.

His faith became increasingly important, and in 1992 he was confirmed into the Catholic Church. As a member of St. Christopher Parish, he contributed to the building and design of the “new” church and was an active part of multiple committees.

He is greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Christopher Parish (5301 W. 16th St. Speedway, Indiana 46224) on Tuesday, February 17th at 11:30 a.m., with visitation starting at 11:00 a.m. Following the ceremony, a wake will be held at the American Legion Post 64 (601 S. Holt Rd. Indianapolis, Indiana 46241).
