Virgil W. Krebs, age 92, of Durant, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Good Samaritan, Davenport. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 16, 2026 at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. A visitation will be held from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m., prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Durant Cemetery. In honor of Virgil, family and friends are invited to wear their favorite Iowa Hawkeye attire. Memorials may be made to Durant Fire Department or Durant Ambulance.
Virgil was born on November 29, 1933, to Walter Henry and Evalene Marie (Klahn) Krebs at the family farm west of Stockton, Iowa, where he was raised and spent his childhood. He graduated from Durant High School with the Class of 1952. In 1956, Virgil was drafted into the United States Army. He attained the rank of Specialist Fifth Class (SP5) and was stationed at multiple locations while serving as a helicopter mechanic. He was honorably discharged in 1960.
Following his military service, Virgil began a long career with Pioneer Hi-Bred in Durant, where he worked faithfully for many years until his retirement. Virgil had a lifelong love of bowling. He competed in numerous state and national tournaments and bowled in two leagues in Davenport. He continued the sport he enjoyed so much until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought his bowling days to a close.
He cherished his time spent with others - especially the morning coffee club at the Durant American Legion, fishing trips to Canada, breakfasts with the “Krebs Boys,” and cousin gatherings. A devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan, Virgil proudly held season football and basketball tickets beginning in 1979 and rarely missed a game. Virgil took pride in staying active, mowing his own lawn until the age of 92. He enjoyed simple pleasures: meals at Iowa 80 Restaurant and Gramma’s Kitchen, reading local newspapers and national magazines, keeping up with current events, and taking road trips to visit relatives and friends.
Virgil is survived by his brother, Arlo Krebs of Durant; sister, Lavonne Keppy of Stockton; seven nieces and nephews, Cheryl Krebs, Debbie (Randy) Esbaum, Brian (Tracy) Krebs, Neal “Squealer” Krebs, Michelle (Bill) Farrell, Dennis (Taryn) Keppy, and Marie (Gerry) Kubatska; and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister-in-law, Phyllis Krebs; and brother-in-law, James Keppy.

Good ole Virgil. I'll never forget when you'd come up to pay for your meal at the restaurant at Iowa 80 and you just had to dig and dig in your little rubber change holder for those pennies while looking at the line of people in back of you and smiling. RIP
