Jim was born in Dolores on November 2, 1934 to George and Leona Smith. He was raised in the Dolores area where he met his wife of 50 years Melva C. Daves. They raised their three children in Cortez
Following in his father's footsteps he logged the area for years. In 1976 he moved his family to WY and worked in the oil and gas industry. Quite a few young men from the Cortez area found their way to WY and worked for Jim. They learned a good work ethic while working for him and also (how to have fun.) He was proud to have been a part of these young men's lives.
Jim loved anything in the mountains, whether it was working, camping, jeeping, or just sitting by the fire on the river having a drink. He also enjoyed being a pilot and flying, boating, Many fun summers at Lake Powell.
Jim Is also known as "turkey" to his grandkids and friends. The foundation of our family is preceded in death by his mom and dad, two sisters, two brothers, and loving wife Melva. He is survived by his two sons Grant, Mark (daughter-in-law Deneille) Daughter Kim (son-in-law Darrell). Grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Dad requested that there be no service, so take a moment to raise your glass, tell a funny story and laugh, remember what a great man he was. We will celebrate what a wonderful life he had. You will be missed greatly.
