Vertia Slayton Obituary

VERTIA MAE SLAYTON, 75, of Huntington, West Virginia, entered into her heavenly home on March 21, 2026, where she was welcomed with the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant." She was born on July 24, 1950, to the late Walter and Virginia Chinn. Left to cherish her memory are her loving children: Keith (Renea) Slayton, Teresa Martin, and Jennifer (Randall) McCallister; her siblings: Joe (Debbie) Chinn, Louise Adkins, and Beverly (Gary) Slayton; her beloved grandchildren: Scott Slayton, Ryan Slayton, Ashley Woolwine, Joe Whitley, Mercedes Cutler, Genesis Mercedes, Moses Mercedes, Alliyah Burdette, MaKenzee Burdette, Skylar McCallister, Ben McCallister, and Jenson McCallister; and 11 great grandchildren. Vertia was employed at the Federal Building with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and later worked for Tri-State Otolaryngology.
After receiving a cochlear implant there, she regained some of her hearing for the first time since her early 20s an incredible blessing in her life. She was richly gifted with artistic talents and found great joy in using them. She created beautiful wedding floral arrangements, designed award-winning costumes, and crafted handmade jewelry. Vertia took pride in her appearance and was always impeccably put together whenever she left her home. She shared an especially close and unbreakable bond with her daughter, a relationship that extended to her granddaughter who lovingly called her "Gammy." They were her best friends. While she deeply loved all of her family, her greatest love was for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It was a common and cherished sound to hear her singing passionately to and about Him. Despite her deafness, she never let it hinder her worship and often spoke with joy about the day she would sing freely for Him in Heaven. The family extends special thanks to her granddaughter, Mercedes, for her devoted care over the past two years.
Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, March 30, 2026, at 2 p.m. at White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Barboursville, with her nephew, Bishop Todd Slayton, officiating. Friends may gather at the graveside beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Huntington City Mission, the charity Vertia donated to most frequently.
Chapman's Mortuary of Huntington is in charge of arrangements.
