Melvin Jr. Pickens, lovingly known as "Dimp," of
Elyria, Ohio, passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on Monday, January 26, 2026, at the Cleveland Clinic in Avon, Ohio, surrounded by his family after a long and courageous battle.
Dimp was born on March 13, 1950, in
Waynesboro, Mississippi to the late Mayrown Pickens and the late Eloise Covan Pickens.
At a young age the family moved to Sandusky, Ohio. He attended Sandusky High School. He later moved to Elyria Ohio where he met and married his wife Evelyn Marie Taylor. He worked for Lorain County Engineering Services as a Foreman until his retirement.
Dimp in his younger days was a force to be reckoned with on the basketball courts and pool tables. He had a passion for restoring and working on cars, he loved to play the lottery, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He stood tall but will forever be remembered for his quiet and compassionate spirit and the love he had for his family.
Dimp leaves to forever cherish his memory his wife of 44 years, Evelyn Marie; sons, Stacey Brown of Toledo Ohio, Chris (Jeannie) Hodgkinson, Gary ( Camilla) Alexander, David (Tracey) Pickens, Marcus (Michelle) Pickens, all of Sandusky OH, Melvin Pickens Jr. and his one and only daughter Marica Carter both of
Elyria, OH, sisters, Dorothy (Pickens) Gentry, of
Sandusky, OH, Dewana Pickens-McSalters of Jacksonville, FL, and Angela Pickens of Toledo, OH; Brothers; James Pickens Columbus OH, Delbert Pickens Sandusky Ohio, Danny Pickens, Columbus, OH. Michael (Danielle) Pickens
Sandusky, OH and Myron Pickens of Marion, OH; Aunts; Clora Pickens, Ruby (Joseph) Coleman, Hattie McDonald, all of
Waynesboro, MS and Winnie (Randy) Johnson of Iowa; Sister-in-laws; Peggy (Willie) Battle, Jean (Thomas) Heston, Deborah Taylor, Tammy Jones, and Lizzie Taylor; 13 Grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mayrown Pickens and Eloise Covan Pickens, maternal and paternal grandparents, Aunts; Hazel Everett, Ginnie V. Howard, Earnestine Howard, and Helen Smith; uncles; Jimmie (Clara) Pickens, David Pickens, Henry Pickens and Bill Pickens; special cousin David "Hunsey" Jones; sister-in-law; Brenda Hannibal, brothers-in-law; Lonnie Taylor, Buford Taylor, Jimmie Taylor.
A visitation will be held on Friday February 6, 2026, at 11am with a Celebration of Life to begin at 12 noon located at Carter Funeral Home 3001 Elyria Ave
Lorain, OH.
