Shirley Deckard-Goodmon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DeLozier Funeral Service on Jan. 30, 2025.
Services to celebrate and remember the life of Shirley Sue Deckard- Goodmon will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the First Baptist Church in Claremore, OK. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Claremore. Shirley passed away on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, in Claremore with her children at her side. She was eighty-two.
Born in Jefferson City, Missouri on March 11, 1942, to Kenney Edmund and Mary Jane (King) Garber. Shirley was raised and educated in Tulsa and graduated from Will Rogers High School. On June 11, 1960, in Tulsa, Shirley married Kenneth Deckard. Their marriage was gifted with 2 children; Sharon and Eddie. One of the most life changing events in Shirley's life was in 1969 when her good friend Nancy Scott invited her to church, and she accepted Jesus as her Savior. She was presently a member of First Baptist Church in Claremore.
A lady that was gifted with the ability to care for children; Shirley loved kids and kids loved Shirley. Shirley helped provide for her family operating Shirley's Daycare. Through her daycare business Shirley raised a lot of kids. She knew the words needed not only to encourage and discipline but to make each child feel special and loved. In fact, her family said, to this day, anywhere they went someone that was in her daycare would come up and give her a big hug. Shirley never met a stranger and loved to talk. She was somewhat opinionated and would certainly let you know what she thought. Shirley had an infectious laugh and a smile that could put anyone at ease.
In later life Shirley proudly carried the name Grandma Goodmon or Granny Great. Family was always the most important thing in Shirley's life. Just as she excelled at being a mom, she excelled at being a grandma as well. She had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. When it came to birthdays, Shirley made sure they were memorable. She went out of her way to make their favorite meal and topped it off with their favorite dessert. Shirley even went as far as finding out how to cook a German meal for her son-in-law. It was her way of showing each of them how much they were loved.
Another monumental event in Shirley's life was falling in love the second time. In 2003 Shirley married Tom Goodmon following the passing of her husband in 2000. It gave Shirley a new lease on life. They enjoyed the same things; dancing, going out for dinner, or just attending a party. It put a smile back on Shirley's face and together they both just enjoyed retirement and each other.
A lady that has touched so many lives and has left a legacy that will live on for years to come. Shirley is survived by her children, Sharon Zwosta, and husband Norbert, Eddie Deckard and wife Beth, grandchildren, Ashlei Allen and husband Justin, Adam Zwosta, Ryan Deckard and wife Katie, Rachel Sandusky and husband Nick, Travis Deckard and wife Janean, Phillip Deckard and wife Sarah, Jason Deckard and wife Andrea, great grandchildren, Nicolas Allen, Alexis Allen, Rilee Sandusky, Baylee Sandusky, Tatum Sandusky, Allie Deckard, Emma Deckard, Savanah Deckard, Clay Deckard, Kaylee Deckard, sisters, Ruth Ann Williams and husband Warren, Mary Lou Rewoldt, Judy Bracken and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, Kenneth Deckard and Tom Goodmon.
