Robert Stedman Obituary

Robert J. Stedman

May 18, 1946 - March 17, 2026

Queensbury - It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Robert J. Stedman, a man with an indomitable spirit, a compassionate heart, and an unwavering will. Bob was born at Saratoga Hospital on May 18, 1946 to the late Robert H. and Beatrice (Mindle) Stedman. He was called home to the Lord on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 2026 while at his earthly residence next to his beloved wife Nancy A. Stedman and daughter Jaclyn M. Stedman.

Through his adventurous journey of 79 years, he left his unforgettable impression on the hearts and minds of many lives with his guidance, leadership, and caring spirit of perseverance.

A proud 1946 graduate of Corinth High School and 1970 graduate of Adirondack Community College, Bob also served our country in the United States Navy Reserves from 1966 to 1971. He later attended Northeastern University before joining the New York State Police. He devoted himself to his work with integrity, honor, and deep respect for those he protected and served. Bob retired as the Senior Investigator of the Wilton, NY Barracks (G Troop) in August of 1996. Following his retirement, he continued his hard work ethic purposefully as an Insurance Fraud Investigator at CNA Insurance Co. and Combined Life Insurance Co. He subsequently started his own private investigative and security services known as Elite Protective and Investigative Services Inc. A steadfast and persistent member of The Board of Public Safety in the City of Glens Falls, NY, Bob dedicated many diligent years of service.

In addition to Bob's exceptional commitment and loyalty to his career, he was one of the most kind-hearted, supportive, and motivating humans, you could have ever had the blessing to be in communion with. His wise and inspiring encouragement made you feel a part of his family, which meant everything to him. He was known as "Gramps" and like a dad to so many people, you wanted to be around him. He made you feel like home.

Maybe a bit intimidating first impression, his humorous and youthful spirit shined at family time spent by the pool, Oceanside vacations, and camp up in the Adirondack Mountains. An ardent runner and avid skier, Bob was a tenacious athlete, with a driven attitude that would not quit until his last breath. Bob never gave up, his courage and strength brought forth virtue and yielded something within each and every person he encountered. Nothing made Bob more proud in his last 20 years of life than his adored grandson, Julian. The admiration and appreciation between the two of their hearts was luminous.

Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his most cherished son of 28 years, Matthew J. Stedman. Bob was also predeceased by his sister, Linda Simon of South Carolina, nephew, Christopher Sherman of South Glens Falls, niece, Sarah Whiting of Slingerlands, brother-in-law, Walter Flint of Wisconsin, and mother and father-in-law Donald and Helen Whiting.

Bob leaves behind many loving family members, most especially his wife, Nancy A. Stedman, daughter, Jaclyn M. Stedman, and precious grandson, Julian S. Stedman. Survivors also include his brother, Stephen and Deborah Stedman; sister, Mary Flint; brothers-in-law, Edward Simon, Donald and Joyce Whiting, Jeffrey and Margaret Whiting, and sister-in-law, Jeanne and Wade Sherman, along with many other nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Glens Falls on Tuesday March 24.

Burial will be held on a future date for a private family service at St. Mary's Cemetery in South Glens Falls.

Arrangements are under the care of the Singleton Sullivan Potter Funeral Home, Queensbury.

Dear Mrs. Steadman,

Kindly accept my profound condolences on Bob's passing.
I am not sure if we were ever formally introduced, but you would recognize my face.
We would see one another on a relatively regular basis at O'Toole's. My name is Rich Lee and I first met Bob long ago. I was the Court Attorney in Warren County Court with Tom Moynihan. Bob would appear periodically either to get a search warrant signed or for purposes of testimony.

At that time, after hearing him testify a few times, I could tell that he was a good, honest and honorable man.
We lost touch for many years, but became re-acquainted at the YMCA. For reasons of coincidence, our workouts often coincided such, that if I didn't see him for a while, I would be curious as to why. He would say the same thing to me if he didn't see me for an extended period of time.

I was unaware of his passing until today (Thursday, March 26th) and, as such, was unaware of the Mass on Tuesday.

I just wanted you to know that I had tremendous respect and admiration for him.

Very truly yours,

Rich Lee
