Ruben Garcia Obituary

Ruben Omar Garcia, Jr., a respected and longtime South Texas radio broadcaster, passed away on February 3, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 66.
Born on May 2, 1959, in Laredo, Texas, Ruben graduated from J. W. Nixon High School in 1976. His passion for radio began early; as a teenager, he worked at Laredo's KLAR station. Known professionally as "Ruben O," he became a familiar voice to many in the Laredo community.
Ruben's broadcasting career expanded beyond Laredo to include notable roles in San Antonio and briefly in Houston. He contributed to several major radio stations, including KONO and Y100, earning recognition for his smooth delivery and technical expertise.
In 2011, Ruben joined Texas Public Radio, where he rose to the position of Vice President of Technology and Operations. He was also known as "The Voice of Texas Public Radio," heard daily across the network. His dedication to broadcasting and calm problem-solving approach earned him deep respect among colleagues and listeners alike.
Ruben was preceded in death by his father, Ruben O. Garcia, and his former wife, Lynette Sue Hamilton.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda Lynn Perez; grandsons Dax Ray Ralph and Joziah James Perez; his mother, Cecilia V. Garcia; siblings Ken Garcia, Cecilia (Dago) Hornedo, Rosalynn (Frank) Gutierrez, and Dorannette (Javier) Morin; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held with family and friends.
Ruben's legacy lives on through the airwaves he graced and the lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

To an old "scouter" & friend of many---in the old Laredo Boy Scout Troop 209(1970s)---Ruben was a good friend, a gentle fellow with good wit & obvious DJ talents---his smooth great voice made him the radio "staple" at KLAR and then some!...RIP our friend!

Rest in Peace Ruben, we were both in ROTC at Nixon High. And we also worked at an Electronic Kiosk at Mall del Norte.

I managed KLAR-AM when Ruben was an announcer at our station. Later after a bit, I left to run a TV Station. His dad worked at the Post Office my mail box was at. He and I bragged about Ruben O to each other. He was a proud pop! When Ruben was at KONO, we talked a couple of times by phone when I would come through SA. The Obituary was so right about Ruben O´s smooth delivery. He was a natural from the very beginning. Several of those young men from KLAR when on to better their careers. He was the first. I am so sorry he passed away so young. I pray for his family and friends. I grieve and celebrate with you.
