Margaret Ortelle Obituary

Margaret (Maggie) Ortelle
06/28/1945 - 01/07/2026
Maggie passed peacefully in her sleep into heaven on January 7. She joins her parents Evelyn and John Ortelle and siblings Cathy Ortelle, Lory Ortelle and Mike Ortelle. She is survived by brothers David, Vincent and John and many nieces and nephews. Maggie cared deeply for all family and friends as she worked joyfully keeping relationships vibrant.
Maggie was a true San Franciscan. She spent 78 of her 80 years in the City, all in the Sunnyside neighborhood. She graduated from St. Paul's high school and University of San Francisco earning a degree in Business Administration. She remained active in the St. Paul's Golden Bells alumni association continuing friendships built over those many years. If Maggie befriended you, it was a bond for life and one she cherished. She widened her friendships with people throughout the West. Affiliations from clubs, common interest movements, and work associations populated her network of friends.
Maggie spent her adult life working for the city of San Francisco: in City Hall, the Probation, and the Police Departments in various positions as an Administration Assistant. She became the Girl Friday for many police commanders. The men and women in blue also became part of her extended family.
Maggie did not want a farewell fanfare. So, no public service is planned. No specific charity named for any contribution either. Instead, she would be happy if you could be kind to someone today.

Maggie was the first older sibling of a friend to really take interest in what her little brother and his friend were doing. Mike and I were close for a few years before the family moved to Marin. Maggie didn´t go with them and she became my only source of how the family was doing. Later when Facebook came around we found each other again. It was like time stood still. She was always the kindest most sincere friend. She wanted to know how the Peña´s were doing and always a say Hi to your mom. Goodbye Maggie, you are the word friend. Say hi ti Mike. I miss him too.

Dear Ortelle family,
I´m so very sorry to learn of Maggie´s passing.
We worked together at the SFPD. Prior to that I went to her house warming party way back when. Through Patty O´Connell and many Police employees I got to know her. Lots of love and laughs.
We´ll all miss her light and love always and forever

There aren´t enough words to described how wonderful she was. She took care of so many of us! If Maggie liked you, you were in like Flynn! I will be forever grateful for our friendship that spanned many many years...from growing up in the Sunnyside to working together for the bosses at the SFPD. Maggie, your physical presence will be so missed...your spirit will always be a light when we think of your beautiful smile and goodness! Love you, my friend.

my name is Bill Thomson I lived around the corner from the Ortelle's on Judson Avenue from 1947 until 1967. I attended many of the Ottelle Halloween parties. It was a wonderful time in my life and although I hadn't seen or communicated with Margaret for more than fifty years I'm saddened by her passing.

To the Ortelle family, we are sad to hear of Maggie´s passing. Maggie (the purple lady ) saved the day on our wedding. Our photographer had one of his cameras stolen that contained a lot of photos of our wedding and reception. Later Maggie gave us an album of photos she had taken at the wedding, which contained a lot of pictures we would have never had. Thanks again Maggie, rest well in the hands of our Lord. We will keep Maggie and your family in our prayers.

John and Ortelle Family, my deepest condolences on the great loss of Maggie. She was always a bright light anytime I saw her at the hall of justice during my career.
She always had the biggest smile, and good things to say about everyone
