Jerry OBERST Obituary

Feb 19, 1943 - Feb 2, 2026

Jerald Lee Oberst, born February 19, 1943, passed away on February 2, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was the beloved son of Lloyd and Ethel Oberst.

Jerry Oberst grew up in Ritzville, Washington, and was a graduate of Eastern Washington University. He spent his career in education, retiring in 2004. Jerry took pride in the impact he had on his students and was often a requested teacher by parents, a testament to his genuine care for students.

Jerry was an avid golfer and a devoted sports enthusiast. Few things brought him more joy than following his favorite teams. He also enjoyed gardening and appreciated life's quieter moments - particularly slow mornings spent reading the paper and drinking coffee, his well-worn coffee mug rarely leaving his side and faithfully serving every beverage of the day, including wine.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Sandi Oberst, to whom he was married from 1974 until her passing in 1999. In 2002, he found love again and married Nancy Oberst, who survives him.

He is survived by his three children: Gretchen Neal, married to David Neal, and her children: Emma Wiedmer, Bailey St. John, her husband, Zachary St. John, and their son, Kase; Cory Oberst, married to Rachael Oberst, and her daughter, Lilly Allison; and Michelle Zapata, married to Albert Zapata. He is also lovingly remembered by his stepdaughter, Kristin Zech, married to Noah Zech, and their children, Ethan and Ruby Zech.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at Moran United Methodist Church, 3601 E. 65th Ave., Spokane, WA 99223, where Jerry's faith and life will be honored.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Washington State Chapter, 10700 Meridian Avenue North, Suite 503, Seattle, WA 98133.

Thirty years ago, in 1996-1997, a groups of friends graduated from Finch Elementary, carrying memories of a special teacher-Mr. Oberst, or fondly known as "Mr. O". He was kind, fun, and likely taught us more than we realized-though, do kids really pay attention to that kind of thing, haha-and he genuinely cared about us. Mr. Oberst´s impact extended beyond the classroom. He shaped who we are and created a safe, joyful space for growth and learning. His character left an indelible mark on our lives, sincerely saving one of our friend´s life. To this day, those of us who were in his class still talk about him. It just so happens that this group of forty-year-old friends put together a reunion this Sunday and Mr. O will surely be a part of the memories and laughter.

Recently, I became a paraeducator. Today, I met a substitute teacher named Frank, who introduced himself as Mr. Oberst. My heart fluttered with excitement. I wondered, is this how Mr. O had aged? Looking at his ID badge, I knew it wasn´t him, but the familiarity overwhelmed me. I asked, "Do you have a brother?" Frank replied, "No, but I have a cousin, Jerry, who taught at Finch." I was filled with emotion- through Frank, "my" Mr. Oberst was still part of my story.

Sadly, I learned that Jerry passed away very recently. While it´s heartbreaking, I am grateful that his legacy has left a lasting impression on our hearts.

Enclosed is our fifth-grade class picture from 1995-a snapshot of a time when a teacher made all the difference. Also included is a photo of Mr. Frank Oberst and I in 2026. To Jerry´s family, I send my heartfelt prayers. May this tribute of Mr. Oberst´s impact on a group of children-now-adults bring comfort and happiness to you during this time.

God bless Jerry´s family. Thank you, Mr. O, for everything. You will surely be missed yet remembered forever.

He was my 4th grade teacher at Liberty Elementary in Fairfield, WA, in '74-'75. New teacher at the school, believe it was his first teaching job. Best teacher. Taught us how to use checks, we built a log cabin from cardboard he had donated from the local funeral home, and learned to love 3 Dog Night, when he played their music, while we read silently. Gave me a nickname which I silently despised, but loved, because he cared enough to appreciate me as a person. I've fondly discussed his teaching techniques for years. Great teacher.
