Carol Skinner Obituary

CAROL SKINNER passed away September 10, 2017 at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, NM. She was 71 and had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer.

Carol was born to June and Billy Sparks in Grand Junction, CO when their extended family grew fruit on the Western Slope. Later, Carol's family moved to Cortez, CO where her stepfather, Merle Hubbard, manufactured countertops. Carol raised her sons in Nevada and Alaska before returning to Cortez. For many years, she worked as a department manager for Wal-Mart.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Billie Diane Duncan, and her stepbrother Randy Hubbard. She is survived by her brothers, Larry Sparks of Cortez, and Roy Hubbard of Boise, ID; by her elder son, Brian Skinner, of Columbia, SC (granddaughters Brooke and Rachell); her younger son, Craig Skinner, of Cortez; by her former sister-in-law, Angel Hubbard, and former daughter-in-law, Libby Shields; (Carol never let a divorce end her friendship with anyone); by many nephews, nieces, cousins and friends; and by her dog Ozzie.

Carol's sons and other relatives kept by her side through her last, hard days and nights. At times, she laughed heartily and spoke candidly about her life. Surrounding her bed during her last hour, her family sang "Amazing Grace."

Carol delighted in flowers, trees and animals of all kinds. She loved being in nature and watching birds. She carried the stories of her family's homesteading years. Many of us depended on her keen common sense, her big heart, humor and Christmas Eve dinners. Carol was all about love. She will be forever in our hearts and loved; we will miss her dearly.

The family will plan a tribute to Carol at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in memory of Carol to The March of Dimes www.marchofdimes.org or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital www.stjude.org, or if you prefer a random act of kindness for someone.

There's not a day that goes by that Carol is not in my thoughts. We had the best of times laughing ,talking serious stuff, just hanging out. It's hard to find a friend like she was. I wish I could pick up the phone and talk to her still. I miss you Carol.
