Donald Raney Obituary

Donald Raney passed away June 8, 2023 at the age of 73. Known as "Doc" by the staff and listeners of KSJD, his greatest passion was the 17 years he served as the host of his show Doc's Roadhouse Radio. He started playing the banjo in the 7th grade and had a memorable story to share about Doc Watson playing guitar in his living room one Sunday morning and named his show in honor "of the one who started it all". Listeners will remember his delightful mix of bluegrass and folk music he shared with us over the years including liners he got from many popular artists and would include before he played their song. He served as the KSJD board secretary and continued his love of music serving as the president of the Southwest Concert Series.

Don enjoyed living on the high mesa in Dolores with his wife Lori Raney and stepdaughter Elizabeth Loschert. He is also survived by his son Erik Raney and daughter-in-law Natalie Raney and grandchildren Jackson, Alek and Eloise Raney of Santa Ynez, CA. His passion for skiing his home mountain of Telluride will also be remembered by those who took a trip down the runs with him.

Charitable donations to the newly founded Doc's Roadhouse Radio Legacy Fund can be made in lieu of other remembrances to https://www.ksjd.org/yes-i-support-ksjd and put in the comment box Don Raney or Doc's Roadhouse Radio. A celebration of "Doc's" life is being planned for late July.

Doc will be missed by so many people. His passion for music and life will forever be my memory of his blessed time here on earth.

I much enjoyed our visits as we plowed snow on our commonly owned lane on the mesa. I wish I had known that Don loved bluegrass and Doc and Merle Watson as I do. Rest well my friend. John Cowell
