Edgar Bonds Obituary

Memorial Service for Cortez resident Edgar Allen Bonds (Ed) will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, July 1st at Trinity Lutheran Church, 208 North Dolores Road, Cortez CO. He will be laid to rest with full military honors.

Ed, a beloved husband, war veteran, and dedicated member of his community, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2023, at the age of 94. Born on November 15, 1928, in Bondad, CO, he was the son of Josephine (Hendricks) and Edward Bonds. Ed was raised alongside his three brothers, Wesley, Donald, and Gerald.

Ed embarked on his journey of life with determination and integrity. After graduating from Durango High School in 1947, he felt a calling to serve his country. In 1950, he answered that call and was drafted into the United States Army, where he valiantly served until 1952. During the Korean War, Ed's bravery and dedication earned him a Bronze Star, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his fellow soldiers. Rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant in the renowned 160th Infantry Regiment, he exemplified leadership and selflessness.

In 1955, Ed found a soulmate in Elaine (Baer), whom he married, and their bond remained unbreakable for an incredible 68 years. Their love was an inspiration to all who knew them, serving as a shining example of devotion, support, and enduring partnership.

Beyond his military service and loving marriage, Ed was an esteemed member of the Freemasons. He devoted over 50 years of his life to Masonic Lodge No. 133 A.F. & A.M. Ed's contributions to the lodge and his commitment to its values touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on his community.

He was also a longtime brother of the Al Kaly Shriners and their commitment to fraternity, compassion, and generosity.

For 58 years, he was a proud member of the Elks Lodge, embodying their principles of charity, fellowship, and community service. In 1971, Ed purchased the House of Carpets. As the owner of this renowned carpet store, he not only provided quality products but also fostered a sense of warmth and hospitality for his customers. Ed served in other ways in his community by volunteering at the Cortez Fire Department for upwards of 20 years reaching the position of Captain.

When Ed wasn't tending to his business, he found solace and joy on the golf course. Golf was not only a game for him but also an opportunity to forge lasting friendships and create cherished memories. Additionally, he relished his daily routine coffee at the Ute Cafe and other favorite local spots. These morning gatherings were filled with comradery and fellowship with those he called friends.

As we bid farewell to Ed, let us find solace in the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the countless lives he touched, the values he instilled, and the love he shared. May he rest in eternal peace.

Surviving Ed are his wife Elaine (Baer) of Cortez, CO; his children Kristi Murphy (Bill) of Charlotte, NC; Tracy Bonds (Brenda) of Trumbull, CT; his 6 grandchildren, Charelle Bonds of Sturgis, SD; Amber Rich of Brookfield, CT; Brian Bonds of Denver, CO; Sarah Bonds of Denver, CO; Bree Farfan (Juan) of Newtown, CT; Billi Biggs (Donovan) of Indian Land, SC; his 5 great-grandchildren, Riley, Lily, and Joey Rich of Brookfield, CT; Liam and Benji Biggs of Indian Land, SC.

His surviving brothers are Donald (Jan) of Evergreen, CO; Gerald of Farmington, NM; and numerous nephews and nieces

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Edward Bonds and Josephine (Hendricks) and his brother Wesley Bonds.
