Hal was such a class act and so brilliantly talented. He and his wife Dixie Carter exuded style, grace and true warmth. One of my best memories was sharing an intimate New Year´s Eve Y2K party at their Beverly Hills home. They were as close as you can get to American Royalty.

I met Hal in 1989 when I was a senior in college and worked as a hostess in The Old Post Office in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Hal and Woody Harrelson were scouting for a movie and I had black and white film in my camera from photography class. Hal was very gracious and kind and a real gentleman to pose with me. Peace to his family and friends.

I am sorry I missed this important part on my first go round. I have a couple of little stories to share with the family of one of my lifetime heroes. I grew up in Granville, one block from Denison University. Mr. Holbrook and his wife Ruby were at Denison and acting in the Summer Theatre there. It was in the late forties as my mother passed away in 1950 when I had just turned twelve. During that time I was a very lonely and confused little girl. I only knew that my mother was dying and sleeping a lot so most afternoons I was alone. I would go up to the theatre and usually find Hal and Ruby the only ones around. They always made a big fuss over me (Many times they unbraided my long hair and put makeup on me all the while answering my many many questions.) They were lifesavers for me and as I got older I remembered those days and thought what a pain in the neck I probably was. When The University honored him several years ago I sent a note to him through someone connected with the University. I signed it "The little pig tailed pain in the neck". I got to meet him again after the program, along with Dixie. When I said "Mr Holbrook I am that little pig tailed pain in the neck". He said to me "My Dear I never forgot you." Dixie was crying as he was telling her about me. As I am now ,writing this. He was absolutely the lovliest man I have ever met and I am so saddened to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to all of the Holbrook family and the world has lost an Icon.
Fondly, Barbara Scott Rivera

I enjoyed many of Hal Holbrook's movies over the years, and especially enjoyed when he had a recurring role on "Designing Women" with his wife Dixie. You could see in their public appearances how in love they were and while it is sad that he is gone, it is gratifying that he and Dixie are together again. Sending deepest condolences to his family and friends.

I was fortunate enough to see Mr. Holbrook as Twain in 2008 at a small, local community theater. I was mesmerized by his performance. We are so lucky to have seen him live but I also immensely enjoyed his work in television especially in Designing Women and Evening Shade. My sincere condolences to his family. He was a national treasure and irreplaceable.

Hal’s passing is certainly a sad occasionand I carry a heavy heart. He has been the most influential individual in my life, not only in my impersonation of Mark Twain, but in my over-all understanding of effective speech patterns, and my up-coming TED talk. One of Mr. Twain’s quotes come to mind.
“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”
Hal will leave behind rich memories of all his iconic roles, especially those of Mark Twain – to live forever in the minds of adults and children alike.
See ya on the other side, Hal

Curiously, Hal Holbrook and Cloris Leachman, who died last week, portrayed a married couple in the 1970 theatrical movie, "The People Next Door," based on the teleplay by J.P. Miller.
