Cecil Martin
June 23, 2025
This story took place in the early 60's. Cecil Martin, Bob Slavens, Clyde Lovitt and Jim Fisher all decided to go hunting somewhere above Dunton. They found a small meadow with some cottonwood trees and made camp. In the late afternoon a jeep come unto camp and they started talking. It did not take long for them to realize they were from the city and they did not know anything about hunting. They left and set up camp a little was from them. Jim had brought a mule up to camp to haul the deer back to camp whey they got one down. The next day the mule became ill and they thought it was most likely due to the altitude. The next day the mule was dead so they hauled it away from camp. Don't know which one came up with this next part but any one of the four could have. They went down to the city boys camp and began talking to them and convinced them that there was a deer down and that they were more than welcome to take it home, seeing how they were new to hunting. So they took them to the mule and they loaded it up on the jeep. One of them said it looked different than what they thought it would and I remember Bob told that of course it would, it is a mule deer. The four of them went back to camp laughing all the way. They decided to go back and check on them and see if they really believed them and sure enough they were hauling back to town and they never saw that mule deer again. Jim, Bob, Clyde or Cecil could sell you anything, including a free mule deer.
