Janet Jacobs Obituary

Janet Jacobs, a longtime resident of Mancos, Colo., passed away on Wednesday after a long and valiant fight with thyroid cancer. She was 66 years old.

In her early life in New York, Janet was actively engaged in politics and business. A dedicated supporter of children's and women's causes, she served on the board of the Ms. Foundation for Women, was active in Outward Bound and enthusiastically encouraged others to support the arts for children. In recent years, she headed her own real property business.

An avid skier, Janet and her family became second homeowners in Telluride, Colo., in 1983, and she became a full-time resident in 1995.

In addition to skiing, her passions were the water, traveling, reading - and her family and friends.

She was a truly an amazing woman who filled the lives of those around her with love and fun. She was the best mother and grandmother ever!

Janet is survived by her partner Shelley Earl, her son Rick Jacobs and his fiancée Maki Koike; her daughter and son-in-law Wendy Jacobs Hampton and Zachary Hampton; and her granddaughters Breton and Zoe.

A memorial celebration will be held at the Sheridan Opera House in Telluride starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Painted Turtle Studio in Mancos, Colo., (http://www.paintedturtlestudio.org/).

Janet was my childhood best friend in Yonkers, NY. I remember building a fort in her parents' lot ( torn down by the gardener), a two person parade down Rosedale Rd, me pulling her in my wagon, Janet dressed in a harem dance costume, childhood birthday parties... so many warm memories. My sister Aileen was Leslie's best friend. I haven't been in touch with Janet for decades, but thinking of Janet Goldman brings a smile.
