How could I ever forget this ol' country bumkin [I thought] when he arrived on Evansville's college campus around 1961,
When I first saw this rascal speak it sounded as if he was definitely a country boy who had never seen a big city?
But look what this 6-5 combination of muscle and bones accomplished!
Wow! Unbelievable.
A darn perfect kid is what I also noticed. We are near the same age so it was easy to relate to him.
I watched him dominate so many highly skilled players you think he had no business even being on the floor with at the same time?
1, some NBA pro once stated, "This guy was the GOAT," Earl Monroe.
2. And thrown in classy guard, Walt Frazier. As I remember, Sloan never allowed either of these greats to beat his Aces out of a national title?
*Or did SIU beat him in is jr. year in a classic ot.- game?
I do believe, out of three years [only] playing, he nabbed two titles. I was there of course and I should remember.
My opinion: When Sloan--Mr.Ill. Basketball teamed up with Larry Humes--Mr. Basketball, In.-- [the acrobatic/magician], this had to be the most unique and near impossible, perfect basketball, duo-marriage, to ever try to beat?
Jerry, I could cry now because of how much I admired your physical skills, combined with your unselfish team-play, too. It was simply refreshing in those days. having heroes in your town, being the very best they could be on the basketball court, and never any embarrassment off the court, either.
It was a fantasy come true, along with the magic throw-in at the same time.
Wow, those memories of Sloan. along with his Bud, Larry Humes, I was truly blessed to watch them perform and win, and yes, they were near being automatic, at the same time.
Thank you, Sir, for the gifts you gave me, Thomas Wilson of Evansville, In.

What can you say about someone who lived most of their life in the public eye and left only positive memories? In every endeavor, Jerry Sloan was a fine example to all in a world increasingly lacking in such leadership. We were all blessed to have had him a part of our lives. A tough as nails player, a true champion as a coach in ways trophies don't represent, and and an even better human being that all that. Thank you, Coach. Our lives were enriched by you. If we're all lucky enough to make it to heaven, we'll look for the John Deere cap just a little bit above the crowd.

Jerry Time has gone very fast and the memories of our Championships will always be a highlight for the University of Evansville Aces You paved the way for 29 victories and no defeats yet never Boasting bragging but just playing hard and challenging us to work hard play hard and believe that it could be done and the five of us did it something that had not been repeated to this day. After your playing day at U of E were no more you still inspired us to continue in a tradition of excellence and we did in many ways Our last team meeting in 2016 still indicated the closeness that we established as starter and continue until May 22 2020 We will always remain a unit of togetherness, love, understanding, hard workers, simple, and just plain ole Aces. Rest well teammate . Rest on the strength of being just another good old boy from Southern Illinois/ Indiana that worked hard in a very simple life. Evansville all hail to thee, true and loyal we will be. Your remaining wonder four Aces of 65. Russ Grieger, Sam Watkins, Larry Humes, Herb Eilliams

A great man and a great coach. He taught me many valuable lessons about leadership and working hard. When once asked him about a player on the team that wasn't as outstanding as others, he told me I'll take a guy with a heart and willingness to learn/work hard over ego and talent any day. He was a gentle man and always there for others. Coach you will be missed, especially those hands, that smile and your kind heart. Now you have a new body and I'm sure you will give them heck up in heaven.
The standards have now been raised.
Prayers to the entire Sloan family. May you find comfort and peace in all the wonderful memories of your dad, husband, brother, uncle and granddad. Many of us Jazz fans, will for sure! He is the greatest and will live forever in all our hearts!

Coach Sloan,
You're truly one-of-a-kind and will be remembered fondly not only as a Coach but as a wonderful human. Thank you for teaching my son great values as he worked under your tutelage. You were generous, kind, and respected your staff/players for their contributions, not their job position or title. You taught the players to be nice to the "little guy", too, for you never know how much information they have up their sleeve! A giant in stature and heart...that's our Jerry!

Thank you, Coach Sloan for so many precious memories for my husband and for me. My husband and I have been season-ticket holders with the Utah Jazz since, 1989. We started dating in 1988, and the following year my husband purchased his first season of Utah Jazz tickets. My husband and I while dating would attend Utah Jazz games at the old Salt Palace. We loved watching the Jazz play, and we fell in love and then married in 1991. We have been going to Jazz games ever since. Thank you Coach Sloan and the Utah Jazz for being a huge part of my family's life. The Utah Jazz, Coach Sloan, and all the many players have given us reason to cheer and be happy when life got/gets difficult. Rest well, Coach and keep dribbling that basketball and playing hard. God bless.

As a varsity coach for 26 years, I always idolized Jerry as a player and coach. He got more out of his talent than probably anybody in NBA history. To think he's only one of 4 to have his jersey retired when they had all of those tremendous teams! He, in my opinion, was the best coach in NBA history, getting the most out of his team's talent. His teams played terrific team basketball the way it should be played. Anybody who got to play for him was indeed blessed because they couldn't have been coached any better. Coaches would be wise to copy his style of being fundamentally sound -- by doing few things and doing them extremely well. He was a man of great humility.

Jerry Sloan was one of the great coaches in NBA history. But what still sticks out in my mind is what a tenacious defender he was during his playing days with the Bulls. In regard to defensive basketball, and the exertion of maximum effort at all times while on the court, Jerry set standards. Legendary coach, leader, defender, and a respectable player in the offensive end as well.
It was a joy to watch you play, Jerry, and the teams that you coached reflected your team-oriented all-out style. Rest in Peace.
