Lawrence Graham Obituary

I am shocked and saddened to learn just now of this untimely news. As a member of Larry's freshman RA group, I quickly came to welcome his kind and unfailingly courteous presence. Stressed out from day one, I never took the time to get to know him or any of our other RA group members as well as I should have done. Yet his sunny smile and twinkly eyes had the ability to break through my gloom. I met many people at college; few made the lasting impression that Larry did. I admired him immensely. He inspired me, especially after graduation. I had a dim sense, from a distance, of the struggles he came to write about, and I began to realize even then that such struggles -- his and those of many others among our own and earlier generations, and generations to come -- hold a sacramental power, calling everyone else to live up to their example in our everyday lives. I mean that in a very personal sense: persevere, be our best, have courage, be strong, overcome our opponents, whatever and whoever they may be -- yet above all, be kind. Larry had many public achievements, but I hope the Graham family takes pride in his tactful, genteel, personal, yet immensely powerful influence. It lives on in those who knew him. I offer my deepest condolences.

I worked for Mr. Graham as a secretary at Weil Gotshal for a time. He was not only a gentleman but a scholar and a man of faith. He made law interesting and fun. My condolences to his loved ones.

What a shock to hear of his death. When he was a guest on talk shows I could listen to him for hours. What a great loss.
