Margaret Hughes Obituary

Margaret Joan (Wilbur) Hughes, born April 1, 1933 in Rocky Ford, CO, passed away on May 8, 2017 in Rifle, CO.

Joan (as she was known) moved to Cortez in 1948 with her family. On Feb. 14, 1951 she married her lifelong partner Thomas L. Hughes (Peanut) in Aztec, NM. To this union 7 children were born: William A. (Bill) Hughes (Janice) of Springtown, TX; Thomas L. (Tom) Hughes Jr. (Leita) of Cortez, CO; Kathleen (Kathy) Wilkerson (Larry) of Cortez, CO; Gene Hughes (Karen) of Carlton, MN; Donna K. Boothe (Doug) of Bakersfield, CA; Peggy Sours of Rifle, CO; and Marry C. (Charlene) Sheets (Rick) of Rifle, CO.

Mom was a loving mother and grandmother to 24 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She loved camping, fishing and hunting with her husband and family. Gardening and tending to her flowers brought great pleasure. Her fridge was always filled with home-cooked meals and all holidays were a feast with everyone welcome. She was a skilled seamstress, making everything from clothes to cherished Christmas gifts for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for her spiritual comfort.

Joan was preceded in death by her husband Tom; both parents, Fred and Cynthia Wilbur; 4 brothers, Albert, Dick, Bill and Dale Wilbur; and 2 sisters, Lila Mays and Hazel Puryear. She is survived by sister Eva Wilbur McGee of Cortez.

Mom was a very kind and loving woman whom would help you in any way that she could. She spent the last 6 months of her life in Rifle, CO in the care of her daughters Peggy and Charlene. We thank them for the loving care they provided. She passed peacefully in her sleep. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her and forever in the hearts of all who felt her love. She was laid to rest in the Arriola Cemetery beside her husband.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Joan Hughes and my sympathy to

all of the family. Joan was a beautiful lady. I first met her when I

helped care for her husband , Peanut, and got to know that loving

couple. She was wonderful and I did get to keep in touch while

she was in Arriola ( as her neighbor). She was an inspiration to

so many. I suspect Peanut was near to lead her to her heavenly

home. God comfort all of you will good memories.

My condolences to all of Joan's family. She was always a good neighbor to my folks and kind to me when I would play with her children. It is tough to lose a parent or a sibling. Dorothy Fulks
