Orly Lucero Obituary

Orly Lucero was born June 11, 1958 and passed March 7, 2025.

Orly was a vibrant, quick witted, friendly soul that always had a helping hand ready for friends and family. Orly loved the work he did with Empire Electric for over 30 years as a Staking Engineer. The effort Orly put into decorating every square inch of his house and yard for the Christmas holiday was a highlight in the community. Driving by to see Orly's decorations had become a tradition for many families in the area. He loved children and loved getting to give candy canes to some of the children that came by to wonder at his Christmas display.

Everyone that knew Orly knew that grass never grew under his feet. He loved keeping busy, whether it was cheering on his beloved Dallas Cowboys, coaching youth soccer and softball, or serving as Mayor of Cortez. Orly attacked every project he took on with an incredible zest. Although the project he loved most was being an incredible father to his daughter, Felice.

Orly is preceded in death by his parents, Macedonia and John Sidro Lucero and 5 siblings. He is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Felice, his brother Arnie Lucero (Susan), sisters Sarah Thompson, MaryAnn (Larry) Johnston, Emma Lucero (Al) and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at the Cortez Recreation Center on March 21st at 10AM in Cortez. Interment will follow at the Bayfield Cemetery. In death as in life, Orly was casual and would like everyone at his service to be casual. Everyone is encouraged to show up comfortably, feel free to wear anything Dallas Cowboys to honor Orly.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society

Orly was a great guy; always of good humor and a passion for Cortez and public service. My trips to the four corners were never complete without time spent with Orly, always time well
spent. Sam Mamet, retired executive director, Colorado Municipal League

I remember his joy of life and so enjoyed my interactions with him when I was the Landfill Manager and I always, always, always, loved the light display and made it a point of driving past to enjoy. He will be missed by so many people that he touched.

My favorite memory of Orley, we were building a house in YellowJacket, Orley standing in the bar ditch and my 6´2" husband standing up on the road. They stood there and talked for about 20 minutes. I finally yelled at them to switch places, it was making my neck hurt. He will be missed by many. Rest in Peace young man.

Orly played a major role in making the Corte Fire District what it is today. Moving to Cortez in 2009 as the new Asst Fire Chief, and then Fire Chief, Orly not only became a mentor but a good friend. I will never forget his friendship and dedication to the Fire District. Orly will be greatly missed by everyone.

Jim and I were so sad to see that Orly passed. He was an amazing man. This community has lost a wonderful citizen. I had the pleasure of being Felice's kindergarten teacher and met Orly and Carol then. We are so very sorry for your loss.

This wonderful man was such a huge part of our family. His favorite saying was Living the dream. After he got ill it was Living the dream to get well. He fought so hard to stay with us. Thank you for taking such good care of my Sister and Felice and all the rest of us. There are so many things I will miss you about but the most is your delicious Stuffed green peppers. Absolutely delicious.

Carol and family, I´m so sorry to learn of Orly´s passing! Orly was always friendly, fun, outgoing and involved in our community!
Many of us will always remember that big genuine smile, quick wit along with a joke or two and the warmth from his heart, not to mention the very large and festive Christmas displays he´d put out every year showing the true nature of the love for children and their big wondrous eyes and smiles along with the adults too, in pure amusement and delight at all the lights and characters so carefully done up by him every year!
I am truly sorry for your loss and his families! Rest in peace Orly! Thank you for helping many of us enjoy your festive displays and placing a great value of the Christmas spirit in our hearts.
A family tradition of ours was to always drive my kiddos looking at all the Christmas lights, not knowing then who took the effort to share with others their Christmas spirit, Orly and Carols were surely one we never missed!
Carol I´m sending you my love, hugs and sending prayers for comfort during your time in need!
With love,
Lydia McAfee

Will Rogers once said that "he never met aman that he didn'y like".
Well, Orly never met a person that didn't like him. At his birth, i think that his Smile was born, and the rest grew on! He always greeted you with his signature smile and a warm hand shake. I believe that God created him to show other people how to be a "man", and how to help make the world a better place to live.
I am so very proud to have known him, and I believe that he is now telling St. Peter an "adivinanza". and all of heaven is smiling. Rest in peace primo!
