Patsy Brown Obituary

Patsy Ruth Howard Brown passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 85 on February 13, 2018 in Plano, Texas while spending the winter with her daughter Tammy Kingman.

Patsy was raised on a ranch in Powderhorn learning the principles of: family, hard work, loyalty and honesty. These things she valued, practiced and passed on to others throughout her life.

Patsy graduated from Gunnison High School and received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Western State College in Gunnison. Patsy then became a school teacher. She taught in Towaoc then Anchorage and back again to Cortez. Patsy was one of the last Colorado teachers to receive the Lifetime Teaching Certificate.

Patsy had her own "taxi service" picking up the older members who needed rides enabling them to attend with her Beta Sigma Phi, PEO, Emblem Club and the Legion Auxiliary. She never forgot her good friends and visited them regularly in the nursing homes, assisted living centers and the hospital. Patsy was known and loved by all who knew her.

After retiring from teaching in 1990, she was encouraged by Buford Wayt to volunteer at the Cortez Cultural Center. This became her new passion! She loved the volunteers and became friends with many of the artists who brought their works into the center. She loved sharing their art with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In 1997 she was awarded the Cortez Citizen of the Year which she was very honored to receive.

Preceding her in death were her parents David and Ruth Howard, her son Michael Clark Brown, her sister Peggy Lou (Howard) Reece and husband Bob Reece, Bonnie (Howard) McCorkhill and husband Gary McCorkhill, and her brother Ed Howard who is survived by his wife Vonnie Howard. She is survived by her husband, of 65 years, Russell Brown and her son Charles (Chuck) Brown and his wife Janice, grandchildren - Treona, (Dave) Bateman , great granddaughter Brooke, Courtney, (Chris) Beerman, great granddaughter - Charleigh and great grandson-Callan, Casey, (Megan) Brown, Carly Brown, (James Kent). Also surviving is her daughter Tammy Lea Kingman and husband Steve Kingman, grandchildren - Randy Neil Wright and Amanda Kingman and Sara Kingman. She also is survived by her sister Donna Rae (Howard) Bratton and husband Dick; her brother Michael Roy Howard and wife Barbara and her sister Pollyann (Howard) Hayden and husband Tom. In addition, she loved and was loved by many nieces and nephews,

Patsy's work in this life is DONE! She received a call she could not refuse for another volunteer position! This position comes with a huge sign-on bonus - a reunion with family and friends that she has not seen in a very long time. Her new position takes to her a wonderful place where hopefully she will learn to ride a bike and swim.

A service in celebration of her life will be at the Cortez Cultural Center at 25 North Market Street, Cortez, Colorado on April 14, 2018 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a memorial contribution In Patsy Brown's name to the Cortez Cultural Center, 25 North Market Street, Cortez, Colorado 81321 or Cancer Resource Alliance, P.O. Patsy was teaching at Kemper School in Cortez when I first went to work there in 1989, and I remember her as an excellent teacher and a delightful friend. My husband, Tim Eddy, spoke highly of her and I admired her very much. My condolences to her family.

Patsy was a favorite in those times she was well enough to join our Red Hat Group. She will be missed, of course. Wish we could attend her Memorial Service as a group!
