Randy Hunter Obituary

Randy Lee Hunter, age 73, passed away in Durango, Colorado on December 6, 2024. Randy was born in Casper, Wyoming on May 20, 1951 to Betty Eileen (Morse) and Richard Dale Hunter. Growing up in Baker, Montana as the third of four boys, he played baseball and football, and excelled as a wrestling champion in his teens. The family moved to Cortez, Colorado in 1968, where Randy finished high school. After graduation, he apprenticed as a carpenter and became an accomplished builder whose craftsmanship is visible in numerous residential, government and commercial projects across Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Alaska. He was most proud of the homes he built for loved ones. An avid outdoorsman, he looked forward to hunting every year and enjoyed fishing and boating with family and friends. Randy found comfort in his faith and served on the vestry at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Grand Junction, Colorado, where he lived for many years. He was father to three daughters, including Diana Hunter and Christie Bloom. He is preceded in death by his parents and an older brother. He leaves behind his brothers Robert Michael and Richard Craig, his daughters, and many nieces and nephews. Randy requested a small family gathering to commemorate his life. His family extends gratitude for the care and support he received from the staff at Pasco, Mercy Hospital and Mercy House Hospice.

Randy often expressed himself in poetry, and leaves this as his epitaph:

I have walked the mountains where the aspen grow. I have searched for where the river begins. I have drank the water that comes from the rocks. I have walked the trail of the deer, the elk and the bear. But I am not the deer, the elk or the bear. I am man. What will become of me when the ground is no longer soft for sleeping, my knees are too weak for walking, the wind is neither in my face or at my back? I am in the mountains where the green grass grows, where the river stands still only for a time. I am home.
