Richard Gurd Obituary

It's with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their father Richard Dickinson Gurd of Cortez.

Richard passed on Jan. 2, 2013, at Swedish Medical Hospital in Denver, Colo. surrounded by his children.

Richard was born on Jan. 5, 1942, in Chicago, Ill. where he grew up and resided until his adventure out west - when he became a resident of Dunton, Colo., a now high-end resort, in his early years. There he lived an idyllic mountain lifestyle, enjoying wide-open spaces, the great outdoors, good friends and fun. After departing the "good times" and becoming a family man, Richard pursued a culinary education at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. He returned to Cortez in 1994 where he became "the best chef in town" at Nero's Italian Restaurant until his retirement.

Richard was a huge-hearted and selfless man who had great pride and adoration for his children. He enjoyed a good laugh, a good drink, great friends and he always had a good story to tell!

He is survived by his two children, Carrie Gurd Goldman and Richard Robert Gurd of Denver; brother, Robert William Gurd of Warner Robins, Ga.; and his well-loved big and beautiful black Lab, Nelly.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Carolyn Gurd; and his brother, Leroy B. Gurd Jr.

A celebration of his life is being held on Sunday, Jan. 20, at the Cortez American Legion, 320 N. Harrison St., at 4 p.m. This memorial is open to anyone who wishes to pay their respects to an incredible man, and will be a potluck affair. Please contact Cyndy as to what is needed at 565-8151.

A memorial fund has also been set up in Richard Gurd's name at Citizens State Bank of Cortez for those that wish to help defray the costs in lieu of flowers.

Richard's friends and family may visit the Ertel Funeral Home website to view and sign the guestbook.

Richard was a regular at a bar I worked at in Chicago, a place called RJ Grunts in Lincoln Park. We decided to travel together to Colorado for a month of adventure. Due to heavy snow we detoured to Telluride ; a more southerly direction. Telluride was instantly our new home, the folks were welcoming. We both found jobs. I was a,bar tender at the moon gypsy and Richard was a regular. We had great affection for each other. We discovered Dunton together. He stayed, but I moved on to st Thomas and later back to Chicago. But he wasn't Richard to me. he was "The Buckeroo". It was the 70s, and folks like us were foot loose. I'm Tony Deckard, not living in Marietta,, Ga
