Richard Stimler Obituary

June 2, 1949-Dec.17, 2021

Longtime Mancos, CO resident Richard Stimler passed away on Friday, December 17th. He was 72 years old. He is survived his wife Garnet Myers, his son Daniel, his brothers Ian and Mike, his nieces Akari and Mimi, his nephew Will Gooding, his sister in-law Mika Kimoto and his newborn granddaughter Charlie Nova. Richard battled Multiple Myeloma for the past five years, and despite his health struggles, managed to live to his fullest until the end with the love and support of his loving wife, Garnet.

Born to Irving and Norma Stimler and raised in Marine Park Brooklyn (NY), Richard loved the proximity of that area's salt marshes and waterfront parks which fostered a life long appreciation of nature and the thrills of exploration. As an adult, he loved the outdoors and was an accomplished skier, scuba diver, and mountain and rock climber. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Richard traveled extensively throughout Europe and South America working odd jobs and learning to speak fluent Spanish. Later he settled in New Orleans becoming a carpenter and working on film and TV sets. It was there his son Daniel was born in 1975. Richard remained loving and proud of his son. In 1980 he met the love of his life Garnet. This was the start of a devoted 41-year partnership/friendship. Following life in New Orleans, Richard, Garnet and Daniel moved north to Western Massachusetts to settle on a sizable backwoods homestead to build cabinets and raise lamas, sheep, and Akbash Dogs. Daniel moved away to serve honorably in the US Navy, and the pair relocated to Mancos, Colorado, where they established the highly regarded cabinet shop, Four Corners Cabinetry. They lived and worked there, always striving for excellence in their craft. Often funny, super-intelligent, and insatiably curious about nature, politics, food, and movies, Richard will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother and friend to all who knew him. He will be missed.

Richard & Garnet made dozens and dozens of cabinets for us for our new home. The craftsmanship was outstanding. I still admire how beautiful they are. They became friends. We will miss Richard terribly and send condolences to Garnet.
