Robert McBride Obituary

Robert (Bob) Carleton McBride, IV left us December 8, 2021, surrounded by love in his home in Cortez, CO. Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life this coming June.

Always in charge of his destiny, Bob wrote this obituary with only minor edits by his wife Diane.

Bob was born August 30, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Zela Davies McBride and Col. Robert C. McBride, III, USAF. He graduated in 1966 from Texas Tech University with a degree in Civil Engineering. Bob retired in 1999 from Raytheon and Texas Instruments as a Facility Manager and started a residential inspection business which he ran part time until 2016.

In 2004 Bob and his loving wife Diane moved to Cortez from the Dallas area where both had worked many years. Bob was active in archaeology as a member of the local chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society and volunteer at Crow Canyon Archaeological Center in the lab where he analyzed and cataloged artifacts. Bob was a dedicated avocational archaeologist participating in regional excavations under the direction of professional archaeologists. He wrote articles for Southwestern Lore and authored many reports along with his wife Diane. His passion was prehistoric survey on private property, educating landowners on the importance of protection and preservation of Ancestral Pueblo sites. Bob along with his wife Diane and his chapter friends recorded over 400 archaeological sites with the Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.

Bob and Diane loved to travel the world often during the winter when survey was not possible.

Surviving Bob are his beloved wife, Diane Edgar McBride of Cortez; his daughter Tracey Stephens and husband Alan of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Jenna, Kate and Connor Stephens; his step-son Lawrence Opper of Sanger, Texas; and his sisters Cynthia Sadler and husband Dickerman of Cortez and Andrea Wood of Boerne, Texas. He is also survived by loving extended family and many, many friends.
