Tomas Morfin Obituary

Funeral services for Tomas F. Morfin, a longtime Cortez resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Pastor Neely Lewis will officiate.

Tom was born June 4, 1935, in Coyote, N.M., the son of Manuel and Selida (Martinez) Morfin. He passed away at his Cortez home Monday, May 23, 2011, at the age of 75.

Tom married Sadie Gonzales in Espanola, N.M., on July 28, 1962. A hard-working man, Tom was known for his skills in fence building and irrigating. He loved hanging out at the sale barn as well as riding horses, hunting and fishing.

Surviving Tom are his children, Sheila Castillo and companion Leopoldo Carrasco of Cortez, Manuel Morfin and wife Nidia of Santa Fe, N.M., and Kia Whiteskunk of Towaoc; six grandchildren, Monica Morfin of Belen, N.M., Raudy Castillo of Cortez, Tracy Salazer and husband Joe of Coyote, Samantha Garcia of Youngsville, N.M., Kateri Bancroft of Towaoc, and Elier Quezada Jr. of Santa Fe; and by five great grandchildren. Also surviving Tom are his siblings, Angie Romero of Espanola, N.M., Ida Madrid of Espanola, Benito Morfin and wife Annette of Arroyo De Agua, N.M., and Fidela Gurule and husband Leo of Espanola; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sadie Morfin; a son, Melvin Garcia; and his siblings, Linda Garcia, Fermine Morfin and Josue Morfin.
