Wendy Spurr Obituary

Wendolynn Ann (Matlock) Spurr died in Grand Junction on June 29, after a short illness. Wendy was born August 13, 1942, in Miami, Arizona, to Betty Jo (Steerman) and Irwin Elwood Matlock. She was raised in Cortez among a large family of ranchers and businessmen. After attending Montezuma Cortez High School, she married Dick Spurr and lived in Wyoming and Montana before returning to Colorado, first residing on the front range and then in Glenwood Springs. After a short period in Massachusetts, they settled in Grand Junction.

Wendy worked in a variety of professions in addition to being co-owner of the Dove Creek Press (1967) and Spurr's Sport Shop in Glenwood Springs (1977-1983). Wendy enjoyed fishing, showing and walking her dogs, gardening, quilting, and spending time with family. Friends, family, and neighbors remember Wendy for her eagerness to help others, even when the task was clearly too big for her.

Wendy was preceded in death by her husband Richard Lee Spurr and her parents. She is survived by her daughter Kimberly Spurr; son-in-law David Purcell; sister Linda (Matlock) Evanoski; brothers Gary Matlock and Bill Matlock; three nieces, two nephews, and her two dogs Beau and Gui. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Grand Valley Valor Quilters ([email protected]) or Grand Valley Kennel Club ([email protected]).

Wendy was a force of nature. They say dynamite comes in small packages, and she was definitely a spit fire. Never afraid to roll up her sleeves and get busy, she was able to out-do most of the people half her age and twice her size. I loved her laugh, the light in her eyes and simply being her friend. I miss you Wendy. It's not the same without you.

I am truly saddened to hear of Wendy's passing. I first met her in planning for the GVKC dog shows when I worked at the Fairgrounds, and more recently I spent many hours with her as her realtor, looking for a new home to downsize. Wendy was delightful, smart, generous, and engaging. My heart goes to her family for their significant loss.
