William Winkler Obituary

William Charles Winkler, 98, better known recently as good O'l Bill passed away July 25, 2024, to join his bride Merrie. Our beloved father is survived by his children Margaret (Mike) Hoffman, Jonathan (Caryn) Winkler, Christine Winkler, Elizabeth (John) Hamilton, and Carol (Richard) Goldsmith along with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Raised in Englewood CO, William graduated CSU with a degree in biological sciences. His accomplishments include being a park ranger in Yosemite and Mesa Verde followed by 26 years of managing national park concessions with 11 years as president and general manager in Mesa Verde national Park. That career was followed by a term as president of Mesa Verde Savings and Loan. He committed himself to many civic groups, both at home and throughout the state. The Cortez, Lions Club, Club 20, the Colorado Centennial Commission, the Colorado Heritage Council, and the Four Corners Development Council were just some of the organizations that benefited from his leadership. Always an entrepreneur he loved the challenges of growing tourism, and giving back to this community.

He was a spirited man who had the drive and passion for adventure while always being a great father with his love for his wife and family as his sole goal.

A celebration of life will be held September 12, 2024, 2 pm at The Cortez United Methodist Church

The Winkler family has been a staple of service in Cortez and Mesa Verde. Mr. Winkler hired both my dad, Del, and me to work at Mesa Verde. I´ve attended school with family members. Mr. Winkler lived a great life filled with love, involvement, and concern . My sympathies to the family. It´s a great loss.

I met Bill through his lovely daughter Margaret. The best memory of Bill that I have is when he came to the office with his lovely wife Merrie. They were holding hands. He was so sweet and attentive of her. They would look at each other and smile. That special smile that is reserved for those we truly love. It was a joy to see. I know in my heart they are both together, holding hands and walking those gardens reserved for those special souls. May memories of him bring solace and peace to his family.

I knew Bill through his daughter Carol Goldsmith, my sister in law. I loved it when Bill was around and shared his many adventures and pictures. He was full of life and you felt like you were part of the adventure with him. He will be missed by many many people. To Rich and Carol Goldsmith and the rest of Bills family our deepest sympathy in the loss of your father. Love to you all.

My dad Gene Sharp, worked at Mesa Verde for many years with Bill and knew him quite well. He remembers him from their work together. Dad was impressed with his hard work and dedication with passion for his jobs.
We as the Sharp family are so sorry for your loss and send condolences to all his family and many friends. Keep his memory alive by keeping and sharing his many stories and your memories of him. We pray for comfort for all. Much love to each of you.
