Betty Jo Sherman Obituary

Betty Jo Hartley Sherman, an adored wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on February 25, 2025 at her home in Evans. Born November 25, 1936, to James R. L. Hartley and Cora Mae Moody, she was raised with her cherished sisters in West Virginia. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marlin, her sister Joyce Ann, and her dearest granddaughter, Cadee Paige. She will always be remembered for her generosity and love for her family.

Betty retired in 1998 as a second-grade teacher at National Hills Elementary School in Richmond County. During her tenure, she impacted the lives of many children and their families. She retired to begin her new role as "Granny B" and spent the remainder of her life devoted to each of her grandchildren.

Betty loved traveling, shopping, watching football, and going out to eat with her family. She was always full of life and eager to travel, particularly to her beloved beach, where many family memories were made at Myrtle Beach. As an avid reader, Betty loved sharing any of her hundreds of books with others. Her book collection rivaled any public library, and she loved spending time looking for new books and authors at any store that sold books.

Betty spent many hours on the phone with her sisters, children, grandchildren, and friends. She was known to mail cards and gifts for every special event and always impressed her family with her ability to find the perfect gift months in advance of a birthday or Christmas. She dearly loved her sisters and looked forward to spending time with them. Though the miles often separated them, they were never more than a phone call away from each other.

Survivors include her four sons and one daughter, Michael (Marie) Sherman of Avignon, France, Mark (Jenifer) Sherman of Pawley's Island, SC, Matt (Leslie) Sherman of Evans, GA, John (Michele) Sherman of Appling, GA, and Karin Sherman of North Augusta, SC; six grandchildren, Brandon Sherman, Matthew Sherman, Andrew (Rachel) Sherman, William Sherman, and Daniel Sherman; two sisters, Sharon Beasley of Charleston, WV, and Eva Justice of Litchfield, SC; and her companion Jack Russell Terrier, Bella.

Betty's fun-loving personality will be missed by all who knew her. The family expresses deep appreciation to her caregivers and Southeast Hospice.

Memorials may be made to The United Way of the CSRA or to Kiokee Baptist Church.

Visitation for family and friends will be held at Platt's Funeral Home (337 N Belair Rd, Evans, GA 30809) on Sunday, March 2nd from 5pm to 7pm.

We loved Betty and she loved all of us who worked with Marlin. She often bought baked cookies and treats to the office. LaVerne Gold

Betty was my beloved older sister. We shared much of our lives together. She took care of me when I was only an infant and continued to do so all through life. We had a very special bond and we were known as the Hartley Sisters 3. I miss her more than words could ever say. I love you Betty .Wish you were here with me where you wanted to be. I hope you have found peace and are pain free at last. No more worries Betty..tell Sherm I love him and hope the two of you will be together. I miss you..I love you ...wish you were here with me. Your baby sister, boots.

Mrs. Sherman was my English teacher at Westside Elementary when I was there from 1975-1977. Fond memories of such a great teacher and person. She gave me a ride home one day when my brother could not make it to pick me up. Prayers to the family.
