Elizabeth Bird Obituary

Elizabeth "Betsy" Banks Bird, born September 16, 1939, passed into the presence of her Savior on April 1, 2026. Her life was guided by Philippians 1:21: "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain."

Raised in Darlington, South Carolina by her loving parents, "Willie" and Marion Banks, Betsy later raised her own family there with her beloved husband, James Edward Bird, Jr. Together they shared 61 years of marriage, a deep love for Christ, and devotion to their family.

While living in Germany during Jimmy's military service, Betsy came to saving faith after crying out to the Lord to reveal Himself. From that time forward, she dedicated her life to studying and teaching the Bible, believing God had spoken through His Word.

From 1980–1998, Betsy and Jimmy served with Precept Ministries in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where she was Director of Publications and Training. She developed resources that equipped leaders to study Scripture carefully and teach others to do the same, impacting Bible studies throughout the country and around the world.

After returning to Darlington, Betsy founded Just for Women Ministries, teaching hundreds of women to study the Bible and know Christ more deeply.

Following a severe brain aneurysm in 2015, Betsy continued encouraging others through small group Bible study in her Chapin, South Carolina home, where she lived with her family in later years.

Among all those she taught, her greatest desire was that her children and grandchildren would love and follow Christ. She encouraged them to read the Bible each year and know the Lord personally.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Gloria; and her husband, Jimmy. She is survived by her sons Treye (Marina) and Brad (Melissa), along with beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Psalm 119:97 "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day."
