William Heaton Byrd, Jr.

June 12, 1935 - March 31, 2026

Columbia, South Carolina - William Heaton Byrd, Jr., 90, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family.

He was the son of Hazel Holloway and William Heaton Byrd Sr., who preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Sue Byrd; his son, William Heaton Byrd III (Trey) and wife, Ryan; his daughter, Tiffany Heaton Byrd and husband, Patrick; his granddaughter, Heaton Monroe Easterling; his daughter, Kelly Bramble and husband, George; and his sisters, Jewell Byrd Patterson and Sherry Ragin.

A graduate of The Citadel, Class of '57, he served as a pilot in the Air Force before building a career as a real estate developer and design consultant. He owned and operated William H. Byrd Realty & Construction for over 50 years in Columbia, South Carolina. His work included The Stage Door and Pug's Place in Five Points, River's End Campground on Tybee Island, Georgia, and many more.

He was known for his wit, intelligence, and warm nature, and for making others feel at ease.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 9, 2026 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Interment at The Citadel Bell Tower will take place at 1:00 p.m. on April 24, 2026.
