Larry Opatka Obituary

Larry J. "Finn" Opatka, 83, of Derry, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026, at his home with his family. He was born on Jan. 14, 1943, in Latrobe, a son of the late John J. and Anna Helen Sobota Opatka. Larry graduated from Derry Area High School in 1961, was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Derry, and was employed by Latrobe Steel in the inspection lab. He had a zest for life, having loved the "oldies" music and especially dancing to it with his wife, Lorraine. He and Lorraine loved the beach and enjoyed many trips to Ocean City, MD, and just spending time with family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald J. Opatka; mother and father-in-law, Saverio and Mary Patti; sisters-in-law, Anita Irwin and Lillian Santone; niece, Jackie Opatka Reed; and nephew, Michael Santone. Larry is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Lorraine Patti Opatka; sister-in-law, Marian Opatka; brother-in-law, Paul Irwin; nieces, Kim Opatka Metzger (Tom), Maria Allison (Jim), Paula Byers (Jim), Tricia McEwen (Geff), and Dana Sarson; great-nephews, Tyler Reed and Nicholas Myers (Katie); and great-nieces, Alyssa Myers (Derek) and Ayla Sarson. At Larry's request, there will be no services at the funeral home. A Memorial Mass will be planned to be held at a later time. Lorraine would like to extend a special thank you to Sun Crest Hospice for their loving care and amazing support. Jodi, Melissa, and Ally are wonderful! Memorials are asked to be made to St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church of Derry or Action for Animals. online condolences may be made at www.mccabefuneralhomespa.com.
