Galen Friend Obituary

Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident Galen Eugene Friend will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Ertel Funeral Home. Military Honors will be provided by Montezuma County VFW Post No. 5231.

Galen was born Sept. 26, 1949, in Grand Junction, the son of George Perry and Vivian Eileen (Sanders) Friend. He passed away at Vista Grande Inn on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2013, at the age of 64.

On June 5, 1980, in Cortez, Galen married Cheryl Ann Doser. Galen served his country in the U.S. Army as a Specialist E-5 from November 1969 to May 1973. He was a member of John Derrick Halls VFW Post #5231 in Mancos. Galen was an artist and enjoyed painting. Using his talents, Galen loved painting outdoor building murals.

Galen is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Cortez; children Christopher Friend of Tulsa, Okla., Hollie Clure and husband, Christopher of Boise, Idaho, and Dusten Friend of Cortez; step-children Jerry Brooks of Cortez, Crystal Brooks of Burley, Ida., and Jessica Hines of Durango; as well as 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, George Friend; and mother, Vivian Edwards.
